Digital Media Production Deep Dive:
Fundamentals, Tools, Principles and Processes

(Second of a three part series of IPNE tutorials on Digital Publishing)

Now that eBooks have achieved mainstream publishing sales levels, the quality of a digital edition needs to be at the same level as the print edition. The eReader public is technically savvy and publisher’s digital reputations are being formed.

Creating a successful digital edition is much more than simply converting text to an ePub format. This tutorial, Digital Tutorial #2, covers what you need to know to make the critical format and design decisions to produce outstanding digital editions that stand out amongst the crowd.

This tutorial is an in-depth discussion of different aspects of digital book production. We'll begin by introducing the fundamentals of Digital Media, discussing XML, XHTML, HTML5.0 and metadata.

We'll then review an assortment of production tools and how they approach digital production.  Reviewing standard ePubs, enhanced ePubs, Apps, and animation, we'll incorporate live demos, powerpoints and video. We'll take an in-depth look at Adobe CS 5.5, some special plug-ins to InDesign and certain specialized applications. At the end of this session participants will:

• Understand the fundamental principles underlying digital media production
• Evaluate the best available production options
• Make informed decisions culminating in successful digital editions of your work that satisfy your reader and enhance your digital reputation.
