Book Expo 2010 - by
Tordis Ilg Isselhardt, Images from the Past, June 2010

I like to go to Book Expo America (BEA) to celebrate the publishing industry, put Images from the Past's role into perspective, pick up some information, and catch up with colleagues.

In the past I've exhibited with the Travel Publishers Association,  helped out a bit, had a rendezvous spot, and sported a TPA badge. TPA passed on the show this year as did numerous other travel publishers  - and many other exhibitors as well!   It was a very compact show with extra crowding due to long lines for signed copies of new hot books!

Wearing a different "courtesy" badge, I crammed my hunting and  gathering into 29 hours on Tues and Weds.

After careful study of the show catalog I prepared an aisle by aisle  and room by room list, and set forth collecting contact information  for reviews of our next book Before We Went Wireless (October 2010)  and possible leads to a UK rights sale; attended a couple of  educational sessions; explored ebook and short run digital  publishing; and made my annual pilgrimages to admired publishers.   I  accepted a bronze award at the Independent Book Publisher Awards (IPPY) party for Finnigans, Slaters, and Stonepeggers, and sat as an expectant  but ultimately unrewarded Finalist for a ForeWord BOTYA. My marathon  ended with a beer at Penn Station with our primary designer and a  publisher I've wanted to get to know, and  2 1/2 delightful hours  together on Amtrak.

We'll see what next year offers, but I'm well pleased with my 2010 expedition and hopeful Images from the Past will reap significant  benefits from the seeds I've sown.
