IPNE Pub-U Scholarship Recipient Goes to San Francisco
Pamela Fenner (Michaelmas Press and current IPNE President) was one of ten members selected by IBPA to represent an IBPA affiliate at the Publishing University in San Francisco, March 9, 10, 2012. She noted that there were about 200 attendees and 100 speakers and she will submit a report soon.
Pam was particularly grateful to receive this grant as she was eager to learn more about ebook publishing and marketing and to take advantage of the new 15-minute "Ask the Experts" appointments.
She had travelled to the Bay Area in
February to attend two teaching conferences and to promote her newest title,
an annotated booklist of age-appropriate reading, edited by Fenner and Karen Latimer:
Make Way for Reading:
Great Books for Kindergarten Through Grade 8
During the conference Pam talked with familiar persons associated with IBPA, such as Terry Nathan, Lisa Krebs, Cevin Bryerman, and Dan Poynter. Terry is IBPA's Executive Director and Lisa Krebs is Assistant Director. Cevin, CEO of PW, was a keynote speaker at our annual conference last year. Dan was an early morning keynote speaker at this year's Pub-U. He has circumnavigated the globe 23 times speaking on independent publishing, parachuting, and public speaking. Parents Choice GOLD Award 2011 for Marian R. Carlson/Schoolmaster Press
John Adams CD/Book set written by Marian R. Carlson and published by Schoolmaster Press won a prestigious Parents' Choice GOLD Award 2011, placing it among the very best products that entertain and teach with flair, stimulate imagination and inspire creativity.
Also, this summer the Adams CD/Book set was included in a nationwide upper middle grade program, Why America Is Free Curriculum, bringing dynamic education coast to coast.

Parents' Choice Foundation has been reviewing and recommending quality children's media for more than 33 years. According to Parents' Choice Foundation…
“This CD and paperback picture book written by Marian R. Carlson, offers the story of second president John Adams' crucial role in securing America's independence, as told by the character of Adams's son John Quincy Adams. Even more interesting is the casting of two-time Pulitzer Prize winner David McCullough, perhaps best known for his acclaimed biography of Adams, as the narrator of the audiobook. The audio version of the story is accompanied by a dramatic original score by Anthony DiLorenzo, performed by the Boston Landmarks Orchestra. The booklet is beautifully illustrated with reproductions of antique maps, paintings, and Adams' own handwriting (a to-do list includes writing a "Declaration of Independency" [sic]). The CD includes a selection of classical pieces by Grieg, Rossini, and Saint-Saëns. For children too young to read McCullough's other work, this is a wonderful introduction to John Adam's story that provides great exposure to classical music too.” Zarina Mullan Plath ©2011 Parents' Choice

Question from Susan Kapuscinski Gaylord on the Bhutanese Nepali Folktale Project:
I am working on a book project with the NH Humanities council and it looks like we will be handling the whole project ourselves. It's a 32 page picture book in color. I am wondering if you have suggestions of printers (first choice would be NH based) or publishers who do color and could point me in the right direction. Here are some posts I did about the project: http://blog.susangaylord.com/search/label/Bhutanese%20Nepali%20Folktale%20Project

New CD Accompanies Richly-Illustrated Children’s Book from Schoolmaster Press
Cambridge, MA - Where would America be without Founding Father and second President John Adams? The Boston Landmarks Orchestra has released a stirring new CD recording of their patriotic piece John Adams: The Voice Heard ‘Round the World with a companion book. From the orchestra’s renowned “History through Music Series,” this inspiring composition pays tribute to Adams’ vital role in securing American freedom from colonial tyranny.
Biographer David McCullough narrates text written by educator Marian R. Carlson, with an original score by composer Anthony DiLorenzo, conducted by the late Charles Ansbacher, founder of the Boston Landmarks Orchestra.
History, music and patriotism come alive in this innovative multimedia experience. Aimed at children ages 8 and up, the dramatic symphony recording, accompanied by Carlson’s 36-page book, with 33 color illustrations, has widespread appeal. “Richly-illustrated with portraits and evocative historical prints,” says former Atlantic magazine editor Diana Rowan Rockefeller of the book, “this young people’s story is also an invaluable refresher course for adults.”
McCullough, whose own book about John Adams remains one of the most critically acclaimed and widely read American biographies of all time, lends his dynamic voice to Carlson’s text. Against a lively backdrop of classical music, McCullough delivers such memorable quotes as “…sink or swim, live or die, survive or perish, I am with my country,” brave words spoken by Adams when he risked his life to promote the Declaration of Independence.
Pulitzer Prize-winner David Hackett Fischer writes this review: “John and Abigail Adams delighted in happy experiments, and they would be doubly pleased by this one. It will inspire anyone, of any age, who loves history and music ‘to dare to read, think, speak, and write’ in our time, as they did in theirs.”
