After more than 45 years in publishing, legendary Boston independent publisher David Godine has more than a few tricks up his sleeve to share with fellow indies. Godine began his publishing career as a letterpress printer in an abandoned cow barn in Brookline. Since then, the company has expanded to publishing about 30 new books annually, and reprinting another 50 or so from an active back-list. Involved in a variety of subject areas and formats, he has introduced to American readers writers and artists as diverse as Andre Dubus, Aharon Appelfeld, Georges Perec, John Banville, Mary Azarian and Barbara McClintock. His Nonpareil list, which brings out of print books back to life, includes such New England standards as Donald Hall, Henry Beston, Anne Lindbergh and Sarah Orne Jewett. Two authors in his Verba Mundi series, J.M.G. Le Clezio and Patrick Modiano, were recently awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature. |
